Bricks Misaligned or Crumbling? What to Check Before Calling a Builder

Bricks that are uneven or start to crumble usually stem from an improper mortar mix, such as too little water or an unbalanced cement‑sand ratio, which leaves the mortar weak. Laying bricks without a level or proper tools can also cause misalignment. For load‑bearing walls, insufficient reinforcement or low‑quality bricks can further contribute to the problem.

You can do a quick visual check: look for gaps or cracks in the mortar around the bricks, and gently press the mortar to see if it feels firm. If you notice cracks wider than a few millimetres or bricks that shift when you push, the mortar may have failed. Also inspect nearby areas for water leaks, as moisture can soften mortar and accelerate damage.

If you see large cracks (over 5 mm), the wall is load‑bearing, or multiple bricks have come loose, stop any DIY work and call a professional builder. Repairing load‑bearing walls involves structural assessment and specialised tools; attempting it without expertise can weaken the building and create safety hazards.
