Air Conditioner Won’t Cool – What to Check Before Calling a Technician

The most common reasons an AC won’t cool are clogged filters, incorrect thermostat settings, or blocked outdoor units. A dirty air filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to ice over and reduce cooling. Also check that the remote is set to a temperature lower than the room and that the mode is set to “Cool” or “Auto”.

You can safely clean the indoor air filter yourself: remove it, brush or rinse with clean water, let it dry completely, then reinstall. Look at the outdoor condenser unit and make sure there are no leaves, twigs, or dust piled up; a simple brush or a low‑pressure air blower can clear the surface.

If after these steps the AC still isn’t cold, or you notice heavy frost on the coils, it’s time to stop. Issues such as refrigerant leaks, electrical problems, or compressor failures require a qualified technician. Do not attempt to handle refrigerant, high‑voltage wiring, or internal components yourself – call a professional.
